The Media and Favoritism at the 2008 Summer Olympics

Friday, August 15th, 2008

I like Michael Phelps and hope he wins his 8th gold medal in these 2008 Summer Olympics. But I really would love it if the press gave more props to other athletes like Ryan Lochte and Aaron Peirsol. I mean, the media hype of Michael Phelps is so annoying. Michael Phelps is a great swimmer and I understand why he gets more coverage than other swimmers (and most other athletes), but I don’t think he deserves it at the expense of other great swimmers like Ryan Lochte and Aaron Peirsol, etc.

I hate when I’m watching an interview with other great swimmers and the interview always turns to Michael Phelps! Ugh that’s annoying. I like Ryan Lochte (even more than I like Michael Phelps) and it was annoying to have to hear questions about Michael Phelps during an interview Ryan Lochte had after he had won the gold medal for the 200 meter backstroke swimming competition. That was Ryan’s moment and Michael didn’t need to be talked about more than Ryan himself was talked about.

And it’s sort of the same with Nastia Liukin and Shawn JohnsonShawn Johnson has been shown favoritism by the press since these 2008 Summer Olympics started. And even AFTER Nastia won the gold medal for the women’s all around in gymnastics, the press is still giving Shawn just as much attention as Nastia. I believe it most likely wouldn’t have been that way if Nastia had won silver and Shawn had won gold. Nastia would probably had been snubbed by the press even more.

I’ve read some opinions about the 2008 Summer Olympics coverage and see that some people feel that same as I do. That’s good, it’s nice to know everyone isn’t falling for the media’s hype and favoritism.
